Some years ago I bought a dojinshi called “Orange” by Tatsuyuki Tanaka (Cannabis Works). He self published it in 1983. He was 18 years old.
One of my favorite animators! I prefer his lively early work over his more realistic and detailed stuff like Canabis Works and Toujin Kit (although they’re great too). His way of animating the characters in things like “Green Legend Ran” or “Download” is just amazing. So thrilling and stylized, full of unexpected timing and exaggerated angles… Which are two common traits in many animators I like.
Check out his fantastic scene in Download. It’s from the start of the video to 1:20
the whole OVA is full of similarly funky animation, but there’s no decent copy available online and there’s never been any translated version.
the worst thing that happened to the Internet’s perception of Tanaka is that some joker uploaded a piece of art from Linda Cubed claiming it’s ‘criticism of moe’ to Wikipedia’s ‘superflat’ article and now everyone is convinced Tatsuyuki Tanaka is some ‘anti-moe activist’.
I’m glad you agree with me that his old work is more interestng, and that you specifically mentioned Green Legend Ran and his Download scene.
